The global Indian diaspora and the world at large are mourning the loss of Tatiana Schlossberg, the brilliant granddaughter of former U.S. President John F. Kennedy and a passionate voice for climate action. Tatiana, aged just 35, passed away on December 30, 2025, after a valiant fight against acute myeloid leukemia (AML), a rare and aggressive blood cancer.

In a heartfelt statement shared by the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library Foundation, her family said: “Our beautiful Tatiana passed away this morning. She will always be in our hearts.” The message was signed by her husband George Moran, their children Edwin and Josephine, parents Caroline Kennedy and Edwin Schlossberg, and siblings Rose SchlossbergJack Schlossberg, and Rory.

Tatiana's poignant essay in The New Yorker, titled “A Battle With My Blood,” published just last month, touched millions as she openly shared her terminal diagnosis and the emotional turmoil of facing it as a young mother.

From Kennedy Legacy to Champion of the Planet

Born Tatiana Celia Kennedy Schlossberg on May 5, 1990, in New York City, she was the middle child of Caroline Kennedy — JFK's only surviving daughter — and renowned designer Edwin Schlossberg. Granddaughter to the iconic John F. Kennedy and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Tatiana grew up amid America's most famous political dynasty, yet she forged her own path as an environmental journalist and author.

A Yale University graduate with a master's from Oxford, Tatiana reported on climate change for The New York Times, and contributed to The AtlanticThe Washington Post, and others. Her 2019 book, Inconspicuous Consumption: The Environmental Impact You Don’t Know You Have, brilliantly unpacked the hidden ecological costs of daily life — from fashion to technology — inspiring readers worldwide, including many in the NRI community passionate about sustainability.

Married to physician George Moran since 2017, Tatiana welcomed a son in 2022 and a daughter, Josephine, in May 2024. Tragically, her AML diagnosis — with the rare Inversion 3 mutation — came shortly after her daughter's birth, when routine tests revealed abnormalities.

A Courageous Battle Against Acute Myeloid Leukemia

Tatiana endured intense treatments: chemotherapy, a near-fatal hemorrhage, two stem cell transplants (one from sister Rose), and clinical trials. Despite brief remission, the cancer returned. In her essay, she wrote of fearing her young children might not remember her, while cherishing her “wonderful life.”

Her cousin Maria Shriver honored her as “valiant, strong, courageous,” praising Tatiana's dedication to educating the world about protecting the Earth.

The Kennedy family, long familiar with profound loss, adds another chapter to its storied yet tragic history.

Understanding Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) Symptoms

AML is a fast-progressing cancer affecting blood and bone marrow. Common early symptoms include:

  • Extreme fatigue and weakness
  • Frequent infections or fever
  • Easy bruising or bleeding
  • Shortness of breath
  • Pale skin
  • Bone or joint pain

Tatiana's rare mutation made her case particularly challenging, striking unexpectedly in a healthy young adult.

As we bid farewell to this inspiring Kennedy heir, Tatiana Schlossberg's words and work continue to urge us toward a sustainable future — a legacy that will endure for generations.

Rest in peace, Tatiana. Our thoughts are with the Kennedy-Schlossberg family and her loved ones across the globe.
