TCS Hiring Drops to 25,000 Freshers in FY27

TCS fresher hiring drops to 25,000 in FY27 from 44,000 last year. TCS CEO K Krithivasan says more hires depend on demand. Impact on Indian IT jobs, campus placements & NRI families explained.

TCS Cuts Fresher Hiring to 25,000 in FY27: Big Drop from 44,000 Last Year – NRI & Student Alert

Hyderabad/New York, April 13, 2026 — Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), India’s largest IT services company, has made only 25,000 job offers to fresh graduates for FY27 (April 2026–March 2027). This marks a significant reduction from the 44,000 freshers hired in FY26, raising concerns among engineering students, campus placement aspirants, and NRI families with children pursuing tech careers in India.

TCS CEO and Managing Director K Krithivasan confirmed the numbers while speaking to PTI over the weekend. He added a note of caution mixed with hope: “We have made 25,000 offers for freshers in FY27. Clarity on demand will lead to more hiring.”

Why the Sharp Decline in TCS Fresher Hiring?

The IT sector has been navigating slower growth, client caution on discretionary spending, and rapid adoption of AI and automation. While TCS reported strong deal wins — including $40.7 billion in Total Contract Value (TCV) for FY26 — the company is adopting a more measured approach to campus recruitment this year.

  • In the last three years, TCS consistently hired 40,000 or more freshers annually, with FY26 seeing one of the highest intakes by any private sector employer in India.
  • The 25,000 offers represent the lowest starting number in recent years (lowest since FY20 in some reports).
  • TCS has emphasized building an AI-first workforce, with over 270,000 employees already trained in higher AI/ML proficiency.

Krithivasan noted that the company sees a stable project pipeline and early signs of improvement in discretionary demand, but future campus hiring will be calibrated based on actual business needs.

What This Means for Indian Engineering Students & NRI Families

For millions of Indian families — including NRIs in the US, Canada, UK, Gulf, and Australia — this news hits close to home:

  • Campus Placement Pressure: With fewer mass offers from the industry leader, competition for TCS and other top IT firms will intensify. Students from Tier-1 and Tier-2 colleges may feel the heat.
  • Skill Shift: TCS and the broader industry are prioritizing candidates with AI, cloud, digital engineering, and GenAI skills over traditional programming roles. Freshers without upskilling may face tougher selection.
  • NRI Parents’ Concern: Many NRIs invest heavily in their children’s engineering education in India with the hope of secure campus jobs at companies like TCS, Infosys, or Wipro. A lower intake could mean delayed employment or the need for higher studies (MS/MTech) or alternative career paths.
  • Long-term Opportunity: TCS continues to view freshers as a critical part of its talent strategy and has ruled out any immediate large-scale restructuring.

Expert Tip for Students & Freshers: Focus on building AI/ML, data analytics, cybersecurity, and cloud certifications (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud). Practical projects and internships will carry more weight than ever.

Broader IT Industry Context for NRIs

This cautious hiring by TCS reflects the current reality across Indian IT:

  • Many firms are focusing on experienced talent and niche skill sets while slowing bulk fresher intake.
  • Attrition at TCS stood at 13.7% in recent quarters, with net headcount additions remaining modest.
  • On the positive side, TCS reported healthy growth in key markets like the UK and sequential improvement in North America — important for NRIs working in these regions or planning return/relocation.

For Indian tech professionals abroad on H-1B visas, this trend signals that entry-level opportunities back home may tighten, pushing more graduates toward higher education or overseas opportunities.

TCS Performance Snapshot (FY26)

  • Employee headcount: 584,519
  • Strong focus on AI training: 69 million learning hours delivered
  • Robust cash flow and dividend payout to shareholders

Advice for NRIs and Students

  • Students in Final Year: Start preparing early for off-campus drives, government jobs, startups, or higher studies if campus placements fall short.
  • NRI Parents: Encourage children to diversify skills beyond core IT — product management, data science, or even non-tech domains like finance tech or digital marketing.
  • Job Seekers Abroad: Keep an eye on TCS’s global openings, especially in the US, Canada, and Europe, where the company continues to expand selectively.
